The Power of Thought

Probably one of the most powerful tools man has. And yet so poorly understood, or so blithely disregarded.

Everything man has ever created was first in the mind. From basic ideas to great inventions. That a writer first conjures the story up and then puts it on paper is simple to understand! Really logical. But do we understand what that means? Thinking about the power of thought usually ends here, with the finished project. Once the work is done and the product sees the light of day, we no longer attribute any power to thoughts. As if we froze our ability to creatively think and to have things materialize in physical form until the next project.

Supposedly, humans have about 70,000 thoughts a day, mostly at a subconscious level, but they all affect us. Our lives, the way we think, our habits, our opinions, how we look, who we surround ourselves with, how we breathe, and who we like and/or dislike. Whether we believe it or not is utterly irrelevant. It always works, similarly to the flow of that river with its many affluents and distributaries seeping into every pore of the land, it runs across, regardless of the inhabitants’ behavior.  When we are in low spirits, say, we get up on the wrong side of the bed, the day is almost certainly a fiasco. One bad thing leads to another, and that to the next one, equally bad, if not worse. We know what a simple, sincere smile sent from the heart, can do. The bitterness goes away, and anger subsides as fast as it flared up.

A negative thought spiral is quite similar to having an idea for a project and carrying it out. Slightly different though, yet a lot more dangerous, I am afraid. Throughout a project that we set out to do and enjoy doing, we grow spiritually and strengthen our wellbeing; negativity, on the other hand, is equally powerful, but very destructive and saps our vital, creative juices.

The above-mentioned has been known to some but the great majority of us never knew. One has a reason to believe the truth has deliberately been withheld from us.

Our actions are the product of our thoughts, and as long as our thoughts are negative, so are our actions. Pointing the finger at this or that is futile. The answer lies in the heart of the battle, we just have to acknowledge it.

We need to look inwards and start changing the story.  Our life story. To realize that not a single thing that forms our lives has just happened, possibly of its own accord, but rather entered our reality to serve a purpose. Since, one way or another, we invited it in, energetically opened the door for it.

It can be argued that we cannot control our thoughts, and how they appear in our brain without asking permission. True, thoughts do not ask permission before they arise, but we can tweak the “factory” that creates them. Know that we always influence the social environment in which we live.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where you are only as good and successful as the last battle you fought. And a great majority of us enter that relentless, vicious cycle, becoming ruthlessly competitive until we are exhausted to death.

We look for cures and solutions, for this and that, forgetting that all problems come from the same source – not our words and actions, but the destructive thoughts that give rise to wrong actions and choices.

How can we put the power of thoughts to good use?

As with everything, baby steps count. Take it slowly. So, at the dawn of the next bad day, just stop and ask yourself how bad it really is. »I am alive, I am generally healthy, I can walk, eat, work. (It could be completely different. It’s harder then, but I can tell you first-hand that it can always be done.)

So, instead of being sulky and edgy, change the paradigm! Look at yourself in the mirror and say out loud:

»I am fine, I am grateful, I am joyful!«

Needless to say, these are not just empty words, but deeply felt statements you believe in.

And why would you want to do that?

Because it is unacceptable to be ruled by ossified habits we have acquired through our upbringing, the mindset of our environment, and the like, when we can become active creators of our own lives.

In his book The Biology of Belief, Dr. Bruce Lipton calls this process “Fake it, till you make it”! This incredible phenomenon suggests that by acting as if we have already achieved the desired and feel the gratitude for that in our hearts for a certain period, it materializes. So our thought becomes our reality.

It’s part of the newly established sciences, called epigenetics, but more about that in a future blog.
